How much?
We have been counseled to stock up a one-year supply of food - and at least 3 months, which is considered by many to be the critical survival period. The 90-day mark is the filter that we are told is the minimum we should be prepared to reach with meals we are used to eating. The one-year supply should be more basic foodstuffs.
However, many (if not most) do not have extra storage space for every single item suggested to last our family a full year. However, minimally, we should have a 72-hour emergency supply (See also "Emergency Kits"). In some areas, the state has encouraged a 96-hour emergency supply kit because of reported emergency reponse times. This brings to mind the adage originally coinced by Alfred Henry Lewis in 1906:
"There are only nine meals between mankind and anarchy."
The most basic and useful items you can begin storing now, are canned foods.
Church Counsel
Extreme Preparation or Survivalism
The Church encourages self-reliance. Members are encouraged to be spiritually and physically prepared for life’s challenges. See 22.1.
However, Church leaders have counseled against extreme or excessive preparation for possible catastrophic events. Such efforts are sometimes called survivalism. Efforts to prepare should be motivated by faith, not fear.
Church leaders have counseled members not to go into debt to establish food storage. Instead, members should establish a home storage supply and a financial reserve over time.
